From ancient pastries to Argentinean delicacies: the epic journey of the empanada

Imagine a world thousands of years ago, where Phoenicians, Egyptians, and Greeks cradled tasty little bags of food, a hint of what would become the beloved empanada. Fast forward to the 7th century, when the Arabs, masters of travel and preservation, came up with a brilliant idea: wrapping pieces of lamb and chicken in doughy bread, perfect for withstanding long journeys. This concept traveled with them, landing in Spain during the Muslim conquest. Here, the empanada truly flourished. Shepherds and travelers adopted the idea of filling various pieces of bread with meats and vegetables, a delicious and portable meal for their adventures. By the Middle Ages, the empanada had become a national treasure in Spain, even earning a mention in the famed tales of Don Quixote de la Mancha. But their journey was not over. In 1535, Spanish sailors, captained by Pedro de Mendoza, took this culinary jewel to the Viceroyalty of the Río de la Plata, planting their flag in the lands of present-day Argentina. There, the empanada took root, evolving to adapt to local tastes. It spread throughout the American continent, becoming a symbol of tradition, especially in Argentina, where its delicious legacy endures to this day.
